My name is Olga. I am a teacher of English from Ukraine. At present I am preparing for CAE test. Would you, please, kindly look through my essay?

The topic is "Which facilities should receive money from local authorities?" In the essay I should choose 2 facilities (from museums, sports centres and public gardens) and explain which facility it is more important to give money to, giving reasons in support of my answer.

The prosperity of the city, as well as allocation of funds for its development, has always been an important issue for local authorities. This essay considers two facilities which deserve to receive investment from the city budget on a first-priority-basis and discusses which of the two should be granted the money for improvement.

On the one hand, museums play a significant role in the cultural life of every citizen, as they preserve the objects of ancient history. Moreover, a great number of books, rare manuscripts and other valuable literary sources describing the lifestyle and traditions of the nation in the past, are also stored there. Due to museums the residents of the country obtain knowledge about their historical past, broaden worldview and form their national identity.

On the other hand, public gardens have become a necessary part of the lives of local people, as they provide green spaces where the visitors can relax from the hustle and bustle of the city, breathe fresh air and enjoy the subtle smell of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. At present, the public gardens of our city are the most popular place of visit for the majority of families with children, who wish to do outdoor activities.

Although I agree that it is necessary to support local museums, in my opinion, allocating finances into public gardens is much more important. It is a well-known fact that people don’t spend much time visiting the museums. However, the public gardens will always be a favourite attraction for the city residents.
