CPE Sample Letter exam 2016

One possible task in the CPE Cambridge exam is to write a formal letter.

"The library of your town is going to be expanded. Write a letter to the Planning Committee. Explain how you think the present facilities could be improved and suggest some new services that the library could provide".

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the expansion of the library. I would like to suggest some ideas on how to improve the facilities and to propose the implementation of a new service for children and adults.

First of all, many of the library users complain about the lack of places to sit down to read, specially in the afternoon. The current main room has space to accommodate 150 students, but it need to be enlarged to accommodate at least 250.

Another reason of complain is having people of different ages sharing the same room, as children often mess around near senior students or adult people, who need a high level of concentration. It would be highly advisable to create a special reading section for young people.

I would also like to take this opportunity to propose the implementation of  book club, which I believe would appeal readers of all ages. The committee would have to implement a furnished room for the club, but it would not be expensive, we would only need circular tables, chairs and eventually a computer. Literature students could run the club to have some work experience. Members, on the other hand, could bring their own books for discussion and if they wished later donate them to the library.

Reading clubs are already common in other towns and  constitute a lovely meeting point for bibliophiles, families and even children.

I hope you will find my ideas useful and look forward to a prompt answer from you.

Yours faithfully,
Patricia de Pastors.
